Edmonton Oilers Captain History

Edmonton Oilers Name Connor McDavid as Captain

McDavid becomes youngest captain in NHL history

19-year-old takes over leadership role from Andrew Ference

EDMONTON - The Edmonton Oilers have named 19-year-old center Connor McDavid as their captain. McDavid becomes the youngest captain in NHL history, surpassing Gabriel Landeskog, who was 19 years and 286 days old when he was named captain of the Colorado Avalanche in 2012.

McDavid has been with the Oilers for three seasons, and has quickly established himself as one of the best players in the league. He has won the Hart Trophy as the NHL's Most Valuable Player twice, and has also won the Art Ross Trophy as the league's leading scorer twice.

McDavid takes over the captaincy from Andrew Ference, who was named captain in 2015. Ference is now 38 years old, and is in the final year of his contract with the Oilers.

The Oilers are hoping that McDavid can lead them to their first Stanley Cup championship since 1990. The Oilers have not won a playoff series since 2006.
